MARIA FRIESEN People & Program Development Director Maria Friesen came to Youth Unlimited in 1994 as a 19 year old who accepted a dare. After spending a few nights on the streets and being immersed into the lives of street kids and sex trade workers, her naivety was shaken, eyes opened and heart softened. After volunteering for 2 years, she came on staff. Maria worked in frontline ministry for 17 years. In 2010, she took on the role of People & Program Development Director where she is focused on providing an HR department, assisting ministry staff and mentoring younger leaders who have the same ministry heart. maria.friesen@yucanada.org 1 888 753 8575 x 105

BERNIE ADAM Youth Guidance Director Bernie Adam joined Youth Unlimited In 1993. He had previously been working as an automotive mechanic, but he came to the realization that something was missing from his life, and he began searching for a way that he could find greater purpose. Bernie had been involved in youth ministry for years through Christian camps, youth groups, and mentorship, and these experiences pointed him towards a career in youth ministry. He felt led to take a step of faith, so he made the decision to lead the Youth Guidance program at Youth Unlimited, where he facilitates mentorship and runs sports programs for at-risk youth. bernie.adam@yucanada.org 1 888 753 8575 x 109

RYAN ELKANAH StreetLight Field Staff I've been there. I’ve been the young person surrounded by broken people breaking people. Eventually becoming a product of the system, growing up feeling unloved and without guidance. That was until eventually a youth worker invested into me, and I discovered Jesus’s love for me. Now God is using what was intended to destroy to bring freedom and light to the lives of Calgary’s homeless young people. Since 2009, For 4 years I did this as a volunteer now 3 years as a staff with Youth Unlimited’s StreetLight Mobile Drop in ministry. As a community youth worker I can be there for these young people by investing into them as I was, loving them and by being whatever they need me to be to succeed. ryan.elkanah@yucanada.org 1 888 753 8575 ext. 114

ALLAN PETERS StreetLight Director I joined the YU Calgary team in 2011.  Each day I get to come to work and be part of an incredible team at StreetLight.  As the director I do a bunch of stuff no one else wants to so we can be effective as a group in our outreach to youth. Particularly I love to work with youth who live each day facing housing, food and relational insecurities. Our goal is that each youth we meet that can relate to these needs would find acceptance, support and mentorship at StreetLight.   allan.peters@yucanada.org 1 888 753 8575 x 107

DOUG WAUGH Worth Auto Director Doug joined Youth Unlimited in 2006. Doug became a youth worker because growing up he got into the wrong crowd and struggled in many areas of his life. After Doug became a Christian he wanted to be part of the solution and not the problem. Doug always sensed that somehow he should be using his skills as an automotive mechanic to help youth but never could quite figure out exactly how to do that, until he found the Worth Auto program. Worth Auto has given Doug the “vehicle”, so to speak, to put his skills to work in a different way. By using his mechanical skills and knowledge, along with his desire to help kids find their way in life, Doug has found the perfect career path. doug.waugh@yucanada.org 1 888 753 8575 x 3

ROMAN WIK Worth Auto Journeyman Roman started with Youth Unlimited in September of 2014. Having been a Journeyman Motorcycle Mechanic in the service industry for 10 years, he felt like it was time for a change. Fixing toys wasn’t enjoyable anymore, and he wasn’t making a difference. Wanting to meld his passions for mechanics and youth, he started looking for opportunities to do so. He was introduced to the Worth Director and learned about what Worth Auto does. Since then, he has jumped in and now teaches young people valuable mechanical skills to help them be employable. Now Roman is an active mentor and positive influence in their lives. roman.wik@yucanada.org 1 888 753 8575 x 110
